Health Benefits of Ayurveda

Are you tired of getting sick all the time? Are you regularly popping pills to relieve your pain?

These days we live in a society where we treat the symptoms instead of preventing sickness in the first place… On top of that, all these medications we take, most likely have side effects, which makes us want to take even more medication to deal with them. It’s like a never-ending loop.

However, there are alternative medicine options that aren’t talked about enough.

You might have heard about the term “Ayurveda” before. It’s a holistic form of healing and ancient medicine that originated in India about 5000 years ago. Ayurveda’s simple principles help you to obtain a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle and reduce health issues.

If the name “ayurveda” still doesn’t ring a bell, then this blog post will cover everything you need to know, such as what Ayurveda is about, what the most important Ayurvedic Principles are, and its many health benefits. At the end of this blog post, we will also give recommendations of eco-friendly products you can use for your Ayurvedic practices.

Without further ado, let’s jump into it!

What is Ayurveda?

“Ayur” means “Life”. “Veda” means “Knowledge”. So, Ayurveda means “the Knowledge of Life”.
Considered one of the oldest forms of medicine, Ayurveda has its primary emphasis on disease prevention and health maintenance, combining daily self-care, diet, natural herbs, oils, and yoga.

Ayurveda is based on the belief that our health depends on a delicate harmony between our mind, body, and spirit. Diseases or sicknesses happen when something disrupts this balance.

According to Ayurveda, being healthy is our natural state. So, whenever we feel anxious or have health issues, we’re simply out of balance. Imbalances don’t happen overnight, so sickness only happens when we have been out of balance for a long duration of time.

These imbalances can be caused by many different factors, such as poor food choices, lack of sleep, the weather, the stage of life you find yourself in, your stress levels, and other lifestyle choices you make.

The most important Ayurvedic Principles

Ayurveda follows these basic principles:

  • Don’t skip breakfast
  • Sleep enough and wake up early
  • Drink enough water
  • Eat fresh and organic vegetables and fruits, legumes, herbs, and spices (nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich, easy-to-digest foods)
  • Do exercises that are gentle but will boost your metabolism and blood-circulation
  • Practice yoga and meditation
  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol

Furthermore, one of the most important Ayurvedic principles is that everything consists of the five elements found in the universe: ether, air, fire, water, and earth.

These elements combine in the human body in the form of energies, called Doshas.

Moreover, every human is different and has their own unique blend of predominant Doshas inside their bodies. The doshas within you determine among others your body type, health situation, personality, and life experience in general.

The Three Doshas

The three Doshas are described as follows.

Vata Dosha

Vata Dosha combines ether and air. Vata people are always on the go, have a lot on their plates, and are full of creative ideas and imagination However, because of their active minds, they do need a lot of rest and sleep. They are typically slim and tend to have dry skin. When Vata people get unbalanced, they often suffer anxiety, gas, constipation, and insomnia.

Kapha Dosha

Kapha Dosha combines water and earth. Kapha people are warm, loving people that love comfort and coziness. They tend to be super patient and sometimes a bit lazy. They are typically big-boned with cool hands.
When Kapha people get unbalanced, they often suffer weight gain, sinus infections, and other congestion-related disorders.

Pitta Dosha

The Pitta Dosha combines fire and water. Pitta people are often confident and competitive. They tend to be great, driven leaders. However, they can also become dominant, aggressive, or critical. They have typically higher body temperatures and can’t stand hot temperatures.
When Pitta people get unbalanced, they often suffer indigestion and skin irritations.
